How to Keep Your Fantasy Premier Mini-League Fun All Season Long

How to Keep Your FPL Mini-League Fun All Season Long

It happens every year.

You set up your mini-league. Everyone’s buzzing in August. The group chat is full of wild punts and “my captain blanked again” memes. But by December? Half your mates have ghosted, one of them hasn’t made a transfer since Gameweek 6, and the fun starts to fade.

Sound familiar? Want to keep things lively, even if you’re a hundred points off the top?

Here’s a round-up of some of the best tips people have sent to me on Instagram!

1. Don’t Just Reward 1st Place

If only one manager wins anything, most of the league gives up by January.

Try giving out prizes for multiple final positions — like 1st, 3rd, 5th, or 7th. It keeps more people in the game longer, especially in leagues with 10+ players.

Other ideas:

  • Wooden Spoon prize for last place
  • Most benched points award
  • Highest single gameweek score of the season

2. Introduce Monthly Awards

Break the season into chunks. That way, even someone who had a shocker in August can still win something in October.

Popular monthly prize ideas include:

  • Manager of the Month
  • “Comeback King” for biggest monthly point gain
  • Prize for best use of a chip in a given month

It keeps everyone motivated and looking forward to something.

3. Add Side Competitions

Want more engagement? Run different formats alongside your main league:

  • Captaincy Points League: Count only the points gained by captain picks!
  • Bench League: Count only benched points for the LOLs
  • The Filthiest Player League: Who’s the dirtiest player in your league? Points earned for yellow and red cards.

The more ways to win, the more players stay involved.

4. Use Group Chats for Banter

Stats are great. Banter is better.

Set up a WhatsApp or Discord group and keep it active with:

  • Weekly team reveals
  • Calling out dodgy captain picks
  • Memes for the worst transfers

5. Track More Than Just Points

Not everyone cares about overall rank. Some just want bragging rights over one mate or to finally beat the average.

That’s why we built FPL Toolbox – a site built for proper mini-league rivalries, not just elite managers.

Track:

  • Chip usage and wildcards
  • Who’s making questionable transfer decisions
  • Who’s copying FPL influencers
  • Who’s taken the most transfer hits

It’s like a microscope for your mini-league. And did we mention we have memes?
